CANONICAL RECOGNITION OF SAN MODESTINO
(San Modestino Soldier and Martyr)

Owning the body of a Saint is not only a privilege, but it is also protection for the town that preserves his relic. We Rosetans are so used to seeing this Soldier under the High Altar of our Parish of Santa Maria Assunta that we don’t even wonder what this Holy Soldier and Martyr that we are lucky enough to own means to us. San Modestino is the patron saint of the stonemasons of Roseto Valfortore and his arrival was made possible by Don Giosuè Bozzelli who was Roseto’s parish priest at the time.
We had other relics of saints in Roseto such as: San Filippo, San Fausto, San Vito, Sant’Antonio of Padova and San Pio of Pietrelcina, but owning the body of a saint is different from having a very small body part or a small piece of garment. It was the interest and commitment of Don Giosuè Bozzelli that led him to Rome to request and obtain from Cardinal Giulio Maria De Somalia on January 8, 1802: a vertebra in a separate case, an ampoule with the blood, and the entire body of the Saint. The reliquary is displayed between the tips of a crescent moon with the body of the Saint dressed as a soldier, and with the ampoule of his blood.
It was reported in the chronicle of the time that while traveling back to Roseto Don Giosuè was forced to stop at a farm in the Pietrera area (stone quarry area) due to bad weather and because darkness had fallen. Don Giosuè remained to watch over the Body of the Saint who was outside the Masseria (farmhouse). In the morning the urn was found to be full of snow even though no snow had fallen that night (miracle). The following morning, Don Giosuè made his solemn entry into the village accompanied by the family with whom he had spent the night. The son of the farmer climbed the bell tower to ring the church bells, unfortunately, in a moment of distraction he was thrown out of the bell tower by the movement of the bell ending up on the steps of San Filippo Church. His mother, who was confident and full of faith took her dead son in her arms and brought him before the urn of the Saint who miraculously healed him.
On September 30, 2023, the community of Roseto Valfortore celebrated the Canonical Recognition of the Body of San Modestino. An act authorized by the Ecclesiastical Authority that allowed the study of the Saint through the remains of his body (The Relics). A unique historical event, firmly wanted by our parish priest Don Stefano Mercurio Tronco. It was an exciting and heartfelt experience. A solemn celebration that led the community of Roseto to live moments of deep religiosity. The mayor, who was present at the ceremony and part of the Commission, thanked His Excellency Bishop Giuseppe Giuliano, the Bishop’s delegate Don Gaetano, and the priests present. The body of the Saint was carried in solemn procession, accompanied by the citizens who where in the Church of Santa Maria Assunta for the Recognition. The church will remain closed for the entire time of the recognition.

Possedere il corpo di un Santo non solo è un privilegio, ma è una protezione per il paese che ne conserva la sua Reliquia, noi rosetani siamo talmente abituati a vedere questo Soldato sotto all’Altare Maggiore della nostra Parrocchia S. Maria Assunta in Cielo, che non ci chiediamo come e perché e cosa rappresenti per noi questo Santo Soldato e Martire che abbiamo la fortuna di possedere.
Questo Santo, patrono degli scalpellini di Roseto Valfortore, è arrivato a Roseto per interessamento del Parroco di quel tempo Don Giosuè Bozzelli, noi avevamo già altre Reliquie di molti Santi a Roseto ve ne ricordo qualcuno, San Filippo, San Fausto, S, Vito, sant’ Antonio da Padova e anche di San Pio da Pietrelcina …ma possedere il corpo di un Santo è ben diverso che possedere una piccolissima parte o solo un piccolo lembo di indumento. L’interessamento e l’impegno di Don Giosuè Bozzelli lo portò a Roma a chiedere ed ottenne dal Cardinale Giulio Maria De Somalia l’8 di gennaio del 1802 una vertebra in una teca separata, un ampolla con il sangue e l’intero corpo del Santo. La teca è a vista legata tra le punte di una mezzaluna e l’intero corpo del Santo vestito da Soldato con l’ampolla del suo sangue. Riportata nella cronaca di quel tempo: viaggiando verso Roseto dovette fare sosta obbligata in una masseria in zona pietrera, per il cattivo tempo e perché era sceso il buio, don Giosuè restò a vegliare il Corpo del Santo che era all’esterno della Masseria, la mattina l’urna fu trovata piena di neve, ma la notte non c’era stata nevicata (miracolo). La mattina seguente fece il suo ingresso solenne in paese accompagnato da tutta la famiglia presso cui era stata la notte, il figlio del massaro salì sul campanile per suonare le campane a distesa, purtroppo in un attimo di distrazione fu sbalzato fuori dal campanile dal movimento del campanone finendo sui gradini di San Filippo, la mamma, fiduciosa e piena di fede, prese il figlio ormai morto fra le braccia e lo portò davanti all’urna del Santo che lo guarì miracolosamente all’istante.
Il 30 settembre 2023 la comunità di Roseto Valfortore ha celebrato l’inizio della Ricognizione Canonica del Corpo di San Modestino, atto autorizzato dall’Autorità Ecclesiastica che permette di studiare il Santo attraverso i resti del loro corpo, Le Reliquie. Un evento storico unico, voluto fermamente dal
nostro Parroco Don Stefano Mercurio Tronco. E’ stata una esperienza emozionante e sentita. Una celebrazione solenne che ha portato la comunità di Roseto a vivere momenti di profonda religiosità,. Il sindaco presente alla cerimonia e facente parte della Commissione ha ringraziato sua Eccellenza il Vescovo, Giuseppe Giuliano, don Gaetano delegato del Vescovo e i sacerdoti presenti. Il corpo del Santo è stato portato in processione solenne accompagnato dai cittadini nella Chiesa di Santa Maria Lauretana per la Ricognizione, la chiesa resterà chiusa per tutto il tempo della ricognizione.
