Once upon a time Roseto used to have the S. Modestino Fair on the first Sunday of September. A Fair not only dedicated to the sale of animals, but also farming equipment, ropes, saddles, packsaddles, bridles for horses, belts, sticks, etc. and other products such as shoes, clothing and much more. I remember it as the day Mom and Dad went to the Paduli (outskirt area of town) and returned home with a small pig purchased to raise into the winter at which point it would be slaughtered to feed the family for the year. Unfortunately, for many years this popular Fair stopped being held to prevent the spread of diseases between animals that sometimes also passed on to humans.
This year “It was an unforgettable day where Roseto was able to live a moment of great freedom in contact with nature and to discover our cultural and gastronomic traditions”. Thanks to the interest of the current administration who hosted the festival that explained its origin and purpose. The name of “Festival della Montagna – 1151” (Mountain Festival – 1151) was selected as a reference to Monte Cornacchia with its height of 1151 meters above sea level is the highest mountain in Puglia. The participants in this Mountain Festival are the municipalities close to it, Castelluccio Valmaggiore, Celle S. Vito, Faeto and Roseto Valfortore. The Festival took place over 4 days (one day per Municipality) and two weekends (September 2-3 and 9-10.) The primary purpose of this union between neighboring municipalities is the mutual interest in promoting our small towns to increase tourism in the area. This initiative that also involved local associations will hopefully bring people to an area that continues to depopulate the same as many other small municipalities in Italy.
It was an opportunity to experience nature and country living. The Festival focused on four main tourist attractions: Food, Art, Move & Energy. During the Festival, visitors were able to experience the agricultural world of the past and present by visiting the exhibition, around the pedestrian area near the former Church of San Rocco, of agricultural equipment both modern and old.
The award ceremony of “Infioriamo Roseto” (Let’s Flower Roseto) was held in the afternoon. An event created to make our town even more beautiful than it is already by adding more flowers.
Locals and visitors were enlivened the whole day by the festival. In the morning. there was a Holy Mass celebrated in the garden and the blessing of agricultural equipment and land. This was followed by a lunch of local products for everyone.
In the afternoon, the Equestrian Association of Roseto had a demonstration of skill with horses and riders in a timed path watched by a huge audience. Many of the participating horses and riders were from Roseto, while others were from several nearby towns of the province of Benevento. A truly extraordinary show with exceptional riders that we were happy to applaud.
At end of the day, in the Ex Chiesa di S. Rocco, now used as a Multipurpose Center, there was a round table in which the importance of the Festival was explained. A non-isolated event with a well-defined program that will bring funds and tourism.
C’era una volta la fiera di S. Modestino martire, santo che si venerava in Roseto la prima domenica di settembre, una fiera dedicata alla compravendita degli animali, ma non mancavano le bancarelle con le attrezzature per i lavori agricoli, funi, selle e basti e (i Vard’e) briglie per i cavalli, cinture, bastoni, eccetera e anche altri prodotti come scarpe, vestiario ed tanto altro, io la ricordo come il giorno che papà insieme con mamma scendeva verso i paduli e tornava a casa con l’acquisto del maiale che serviva per le scorte annuali. Purtroppo da molti anni non si fa più la fiera vietata per evitare il diffondersi di malattie fra animali ed a volte trasmissibili all’uomo.
Quest’anno “È stata una giornata indimenticabile dove Roseto ha potuto far vivere un momento di grande libertà a contatto con la natura e alla scoperta delle nostre tradizioni culturali e gastronomiche”. grazie all’interessamento dell’Amministrazione attuale si è dato seguito ad un Festival che spiego cosa è e a cosa serve, si chiama “ Festival della Montagna – 1151” il riferimento è a Monte Cornacchia che con la sua altezza di 1151 metri sul livello del mare è la montagna più alta della Puglia e i partecipanti a questa festa della Montagna sono i Comuni vicini ad essa, Castelluccio Valmaggiore, Celle S. Vito, Faeto e Roseto Valfortore, il Festival si svolge in 4 giorni una giornata per Comune, giornate che fanno riferimento a due fine settimana quest’anno è stato il 2 e il 3 di settembre e il 9 e il 10 di settembre. Lo scopo primario di questa unione tra Comuni vicini è la volontà di far conoscere i nostri piccoli paesi ed incrementare il turismo nel territorio, questa iniziativa che coinvolge anche le Associazioni presenti sul territorio darà nuova spinta visto lo spopolamento continuo che hanno i piccoli comuni in Italia.
È stata una occasione per rivivere nella natura ed nel il territorio. Hanno caratterizzato il Festival quattro cose principali per il turismo: Food, Art, Move & Energy. Durante il Festival i visitatori hanno potuto rivivere direttamente il mondo agricolo del tempo passato e goderne anche il più recente, con l’esposizione intorno all’area pedonale vicino alla ex Chiesa di San Rocco di mezzi agricoli di ieri e di oggi, si sono potute ammirare decine di macchine adibite all’agricoltura sia moderne che di vecchia data.
Nel pomeriggio si è tenuta la premiazione della manifestazione “Infioriamo Roseto” manifestazione voluta per rendere più bello il nostro paese che già è bello, ma infiorato lo è ancora di più.
Il Festival ha allietato l’intera giornata con, un movimento di gente del posto e di molti forestieri richiamati dall’evento, sempre in mattinata c’è stata nel giardino la celebrazione di una Santa Messa e la benedizione dei mezzi agricoli e delle campagne. E’ seguito un pranzo per tutti con prodotti locali
Nel pomeriggio, da parte dell’Associazione Equestre di Roseto, c’è stata una manifestazione di bravura con cavalli e cavalieri in un percorso a tempo con un enorme pubblico, tanti i cavalli e i cavalieri che hanno partecipato non solo di Roseto ma di molti paesi finanche dalla provincia di Benevento, uno spettacolo veramente straordinario e con cavalieri eccezionali a cui va il nostro applauso.
Per finire la giornata, c’è stato nella Ex Chiesa di S. Rocco, ora adibita a Centro Polivalente, una tavola rotonda in cui è stata spiegata l’utilità del Festival che non sarà una manifestazione isolata, ma con un programma ben definito porterà fondi e turismo.
